Don’t Stress – Holiday Photos for Less

The Holiday’s are a time for family, fun and being thankful. But sometimes, the stress and pressure of our “To Do” and “To Buy” list can get the best of us. One thing in particular that I started to stress about is the cost of Holiday photos. Instead I had a great idea pitched to me by the all mighty wise one, my mom (hahaha).
She reminded me that Holiday photos are about the people in the picture, not the place where you take the picture or the price you pay for them. She suggested I take my photos at home – great idea right? I mean who looks at a Christmas photo of two adorable twins and says, “since you didn’t take that photo at ABC Photo studio your pictures are the worst”.
So here is what we did this year and how you can do the same.
First, shop for your holiday look and pick a location. This year we went with Christmas Chic and decided to take our photos at home. Next decided which camera you’ll use and schedule a friend or family member to take the photos for you. My sister has a great digital camera and she also agreed to be our photographer for the day. If you don’t have access to a digital camera, most smart phones have a camera with pretty good quality. Finally, point and shoot.
I have a Mac so I used iPhoto to do some very quick, easy and simple editing such as cropping and blurring – any photo editing software should do the trick. You can also change the color of your photos to black and white, sepia, antique and more.
Instead of stressing about the cost of my holiday photos and not taking them I now have great photos that I’ll cherish forever. And in true holiday tradition, I’m also going take the priceless pics and add them to my Christmas Cards. If you’re going to send out cards, a great idea is to use an online service and design them yourself. Vistaprint, Shutterfly, Walmart and others allows you to create cards online (Shutterfly will event send out the cards for you). Walmart can print the Christmas cards on photo paper for you for as low as 40 cents. Folded cards can cost anywhere from $1.10 to about $2.60 each.
Remember, Christmas is not about how much a gift cost, but the thought behind it.
Happy Holidays!

A life-long fat girl, Sommer Johnson decided to strap on some fancy tennis shoes, wrestle into a sports bra that would likely be one size too small (they always are--that's what you get with big boobs), and go on a 38 week journey to run the Peachtree Road Race. In the midst of trying to find her healthier self, she found that her struggle was not all that rare. Between the full-figured audience of her online publication, Gemini Magazine, and friends who were rowing up the fat river with no paddle, Sommer decided to share her journey to help women like her get past their fears (and get moving--literally). A runner newbie, Insanity graduate, Turbofire enthusiast, and foodie experimenter, Sommer Johnson is a 32 year old mother of 2 and wife of 1 who lives in Atlanta, GA.
