For the month of December, West Elm has partnered with Etsy to host “Handmade Holiday Workshops” across the country at their retail stores. At the West Elm in midtown, the Handmade Holiday Workshop drew in a great crowd to create handmade ornaments for a christmas tree to be donated to the Elon Home for Children.
Etsy shop owners were on hand to instruct kids and adults on making paper ornaments for the tree. Light appetizers and drinks were served to shoppers as they browsed West Elm and were treated to 10% off in store purchases. Several local Etsy vendors had items for sale around the shop thanks to West Elm. As an Etsy shop owner too (airrenhome.etsy.com) this was a great idea!
Elon Homes for Children: The Elon Homes for Children was founded in 1907 by the Southern Convention of the Christian Church, a forerunner of the United Church of Christ, at Elon College, North Carolina. Boys Town of North Carolina was founded in Charlotte in 1970, merged with Elon Homes for Children in 1985 and soon added services for girls. In it hundred plus year history, Elon Homes has served thousands of children and families. Today the agency focuses on safe haven, life skills and education for the children in its care. In 2008, the agency changed its name to Elon Homes and Schools for Children to better reflect the range of services offered to children in its care.
So what is Etsy? Etsy is the world’s handmade marketplace. All goods are either handmade or vintage. As a designer, I’m always looking for unique budget friendly items for my clients and etsy is my little secret (but not anymore). Etsy allows talented artists, designers and vintage lovers to share their unique products with the world. I always feel good purchasing from Etsy because I’m helping a small business owner support their dream and family!

A life-long fat girl, Sommer Johnson decided to strap on some fancy tennis shoes, wrestle into a sports bra that would likely be one size too small (they always are--that's what you get with big boobs), and go on a 38 week journey to run the Peachtree Road Race. In the midst of trying to find her healthier self, she found that her struggle was not all that rare. Between the full-figured audience of her online publication, Gemini Magazine, and friends who were rowing up the fat river with no paddle, Sommer decided to share her journey to help women like her get past their fears (and get moving--literally). A runner newbie, Insanity graduate, Turbofire enthusiast, and foodie experimenter, Sommer Johnson is a 32 year old mother of 2 and wife of 1 who lives in Atlanta, GA.
