Charlotte is expected to receive hundreds of people from across the nation to attend the 23rd annual National Poetry Slam this August 2012.  The National Poetry Slam hosts the largest team poetry event in the world.  This year’s event will be sponsored by SlamCharlotte, Poetry Slam Inc., and the Blumenthal Performing Arts Theatre.

Some of you may be asking, “What is Slam Poetry?”  A poetry slam, or “Slam Poetry,” is a competition at which poets read or recite their original work.  The pieces range in category and are performed by a solo artist or by a group of poets. These performances are then judged on a numeric scale by previously selected members of the audience or predetermined judges.  Still don’t fully understand the idea?  Click the following names to watch some pieces by my (personal) favorite poets; Joshua Bennett, Justin Reilly, Sarah Kay, Andrea Gibson, Anis Mojgani.

How the event works is 72 teams from across the US will compete for the national championship August 7th through the 11th.  There will be heated competition leading up to the finals (1 Group Piece and 1 Solo).  The finals will be held on August 11th at the Knights Theater on South Tryon Street.

This poetry slam is going to be something to see.  You may purchase an All Access Pass, a Student Pass or an Individual Ticket.  For more information on tickets follow this link.

Charlotte is going to be alive with passion this August – I suggest you don’t miss it.
