My Stylish Career: McKinsey Harris

McKinsey Harris, morning shift reporter for News 14 Carolina, has spent her entire career on camera. Being camera ready by 4:30am is no easy feat. Harris manages to pull together her on screen look based on her love of searching for a good deal. With Loft, TJ Maxx, and Marshall’s among her favorites, Harris shops for sales because “it’s almost like a game to keep an eye on things.” With clothing as her vice, she feels it is important to seek good deals for her sensibilities as well as her wallet. “I don’t feel as bad about it [shopping] since I’m not dropping several hundred dollars on one piece of clothing that I might wear a few times.”

How does her on camera style differ from that off screen? When working the morning shift for News 14 Carolina, Harris tends to tone down her accessories. “The only thing I’ve had to change is jewelry. I love big, loud pieces – and lots of them! When I’m on air I try to wear a big necklace or big earrings and let that be my one piece for the day. I don’t want my look to be too distracting!” Overall, Harris wears “a lot of the same things on and off camera” but might “pair a skirt with a dressier top and heels rather than a tank top and sandals.” Because she never knows where the news may take her, Harris has to be sure she is dressed appropriately for a wide range of occasions: a baseball game or a city council meeting.

Harris’ main source of inspiration for her wardrobe comes from her mom, Susie Harris, who was featured in several Stein Mart commercials in 2007. By combining classic pieces with modern, trendy pieces, Susie has influenced McKinsey’s style for years. “Lately we’ve realized we have many of the same outfits or pieces that we purchased separately, but end up wearing to the same event! It seems the same items catch both our eyes.” While her mom is a major influence, Harris is also a source of inspiration for others. “I wore an orange maxi skirt from Loft one night and by the end of the night four people asked me where I got it!” For Harris, sharing her love of shopping for a good deal is important. “I always tell the ladies I work with when I find good deals or what stores are having a good sale”.
