The Chula Vista attorneys serve as the chief legal advisor to the Mayor, City Council, and all City departments. She defends the City against lawsuits and protects San Diego’s residents, neighborhoods and quality of life. City attorneys share jurisdiction with the district attorney to prosecute certain misdemeanor crimes that occur within their City limits. The City Attorney’s office also provides public service by providing pro bono representation and legal assistance to low income San Diego County residents and businesses.
In addition, the City Attorney’s office actively supports local civic and charitable organizations through financial and in-kind support for various programs that provide financial and legal assistance to individuals in need of assistance and/or resources. The City Attorney’s office also annually participates in the City Volunteer Lawyer Program, which matches qualified City attorneys with clients who need legal assistance but cannot afford private counsel.

As part of the DA’s Victim Services Division, victim advocates work to provide crime victims with a variety of mandated and optional services. In 2016, victim advocates assisted 12,789 victims of crime.
Throughout the year, the DA’s office sponsors a variety of educational and community outreach programs to help residents better understand their rights, responsibilities, and the judicial process. Educating the public about their role in our justice system is vital to maintaining the integrity of our American legal system and preserving the dignity of every citizen.
